Recovery funding creates 500 jobs for youth in Minneapolis

url: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/news/20090605METPList.asp
Minneapolis has been awarded more than $1.6 million as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) toward providing employment opportunities for youth. The City of Minneapolis offers valuable summer employment experiences for Minneapolis youth through its partner agencies. The 2009 ARRA dollars will enhance the City’s ongoing programming efforts by providing approximately 500 more summer jobs for youth. A total of 2,300 youth will be employed through City youth employment programs this summer. The program will create jobs for youths aged 14-24, with an emphasis on summer employment. Local organizations will ensure that critical work-readiness skills training will be provided to participating youth prior to the start of their job and continuing throughout their employment. The City of Minneapolis Community Planning and Economic Development (CPED) department is posting its list of participating agencies in the Department of Labor’s Youth Employment Training program. The Minneapolis Employment Training Program (METP) is managed through CPED, and will administer the program with partner agencies citywide. In addition to Youth Training, additional monies were received for Adult and Dislocated Worker Training. These summer jobs provide valuable training and work experiences that prepare youth for success in their future careers. The participating agencies were selected from a list generated through a request for proposals released March 13, 2009. The agencies involved will provide youth employment services during one of three service periods; summer of 2009, summer of 2009 with employment through May 31, 2010, and beginning September 1, 2009 through May 31, 2010. For more information, contact the METP offices, or see the list of partner agencies.

Got a new boulevard tree? They are thirsty!

url: http://www.minneapolisparks.org/default.asp?PageID=52&prid=940
MPRB encourages watering during record-setting dry spring May went down in the weather history books as one of the driest on record, so the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board’s (MPRB) Forestry Division encourages people to water their boulevard trees, especially those planted this spring. “Residents sometimes lose track of when they last watered a tree. A simple trick for remembering is to water your tree on the day your trash is picked up. Just make trash day, Water Your Tree Day,” suggested Ralph Sievert, MPRB Director of Forestry. This spring the MPRB’s Forestry Division planted over 4,000 trees citywide to replace trees that have been lost due to storms, Dutch elm disease and other causes. Forestry crews will complete the first two waterings and place four to six inches of wood chips at the base of each tree by early June. After this initial care, watering new boulevard trees becomes the responsibility of the property owner. To maintain a healthy new tree, they should be watered once or twice a week. Watering is not required during any week that rainfall levels reach one inch or more. The best way to water a new tree is to use a garden hose with the water turned on at a slow rate for two hours. Let the water soak into the ground to a depth of 18 inches. This is where 90 percent of a tree’s roots grow. If a garden hose is not available, 20 gallons of water will properly soak a new tree. Try to water the same amount at each watering. Maintain a 4-inch layer of mulch, such as wood chips, around a new tree. Young or newly planted trees should have a two-foot radius of mulch placed a few inches away from the trunk. The MPRB Forestry Division provides woodchips at sites throughout Minneapolis. To find a woodchip distribution site check the website at www.minneapolisparks.org or call 612-370-4900. Summer Movie Series in Stevens Square Park to Feature Live Music, Local Film Shorts, and Cult Classics

Dates: Wednesdays June 10 through July 15 Time: 8:15 p.m. Location: Stevens Square Park Address: 1801 Stevens Ave S
If the phrase “movies and music in the park” makes you think of community orchestras and “Honey, I Blew Up the Baby,” you probably haven’t been to Cinema & Civics. Cinema & Civics, the annual movie and music series in Stevens Square Park, has always catered to an audience that demands more from their free public events, and this year is no exception. For six consecutive Wednesdays in June and July, the park (located in Minneapolis at 1801 Stevens Avenue South) will stage some of the Twin Cities’ hardest rocking bands and screen cult favorites like Labyrinth and Mystery Science Theater 3000. In addition to a musical performance and a feature film, each night will also include a short discussion with a politician or community representative and a screening of a short, locally-made film. Sarah Jordet, Cinema & Civics coordinator, says her goal for the 2009 series is to help make Minneapolis residents aware of the many opportunities available to them. “We’ll be partnering with local organizations, filmmakers, musicians, and artists to make these events as fun, interesting, and informative as possible. People who come out to the park are going to get great, free entertainment, and they’re also going to have a chance to learn about bands, filmmakers, and artists they might not otherwise know about.” This year’s series begins on Wednesday, June 10th and runs every subsequent Wednesday through July 15th. The lineup includes:
  • June 10th: Star Trek IV with musical guest Kill to Kill
  • June 17th: A Mighty Wind with musical guest The Absent Arch
  • June 24th: Harold and Maude with musical guest F Knights
  • July 1st: Labyrinth with musical guest STNNNG
  • July 8th: Mystery Science Theater 3000 with musical guest Tentacle Boy
  • July 15th: An entire evening of shorts by local filmmakers (titles TBA) with musical guest Economy Team
Activities, guest speakers, and the short films for each night are still being determined. For a complete updated listing of each night’s schedule, visit www.cinemaandcivics.org.

Planning week for National Night Out is June 15 - 21

url: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/news/20090601NNOPlanning.asp
National Night Out is coming up fast, and now is the time to start making preparations on your block for the night that brings neighbors together. This year, National Night Out (NNO) is Tuesday, Aug. 4. June 15-21 is Minneapolis National Night Out Planning Week. Minneapolis wants to make it easy for block clubs and neighbors to get started now on their plans. Register your event online today. When you register, you can also apply to close your street for your event (remember you need the permission of 75 percent of your neighbors to do so). The deadline for registering your event for free is July 21. You cam also register your event and apply for street closure by calling 311 (or 612-673-3000). Remember to make plans to reschedule if it should rain. Register early if you want to request a firefighter, police officer, or a canine officer and dog to visit your location. A limited amount of start-up kits are available for first-time NNO events. They contain plates, cups, plastic utensils, napkins, etc. for 50. If your block is new to NNO this year, call 612-673-2956 to see if a kit is available. Each event organizer will receive Mystery Point Passes for Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America and vouchers (each good for 2 tickets) for Minnesota Twins games to use as door prizes. Each Mystery Point pass is worth either a single ride, a day of rides or a whole season of rides. If you register your NNO event by July 14, you will be entered into a drawing for other door prizes donated by Minneapolis businesses.

Orientation meeting for Restorative Justice-Community Action Tomorrow night! ... NNO Event Registration Now Available On-Line ... Citizens Academy

Dear Minneapolis Residents, Business Owners and Visitors: Thank you for your efforts in the success of National Night Out 2008 citywide. Because of your commitment to building stronger communities, Minneapolis was once again recognized nationally. These block events and parties contribute to the decrease in crime in our community. Through National Night Out and other block club events, you have built a community where youth have examples of good citizenship and learn the benefits of community. Decreasing youth violence is a goal of the city, with the Mayor’s Blue Print for Action, which draws on increased law enforcement and public health strategies to address the root causes of violence. The City, its residents, and programs who serve youth are working together to meet the goals of The Blue Print for Action:
  • Connect every youth with a trusted adult,
  • Intervene at the first sign that youth are at risk for violence,
  • Restore youth who have gone down the wrong path, and
  • Unlearn the culture of violence in our community.
As the Minneapolis Police Chief, I have set a goal of decreasing crime and have done this by putting an emphasis on the juvenile crime, keeping kids in school and connecting them with the help and resources they need. I encourage you to join the Mayor and me in our goals by connecting with the youth on your block. National Night Out is an opportunity for you to meet everyone on the block, which increases awareness and safety. This is the basis of block clubs and National Night Out. As you plan your Night to Unite Event, remember that whether it is a barbeque, a evening of movies, a talent show, or games, what is important is meeting neighbors and staying connected. I ask you to bring your neighbors together on National Night Out to make your block a safer place to live. It’s a time when you can make the commitment to know each other, watch out for each other and call 911 when police are needed. The initial mailing provides a lot of information for holding National Night Out on your block. You can also look for updates on the Minneapolis National Night Out Webpage, www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/nno. Look forward to partying with you again this year. Sincerely, Timothy J. Dolan Chief Minneapolis Police Department

The 26th Annual Minneapolis National Night Out Tuesday, August 4, 2009

National Night Out parties are a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors, establish those informal "over the fence" networks that make for a safer block, and to celebrate your very local community efforts in crime prevnetion. The following link is your One-Stop-Shop to learn more about NNO, download a registration packet, NNO News, clipart, etc. You will also find the on-line registration form -- register your event early for a chance at door prizes, an opportunity to block off your street, and request special MPD units to attend your event: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/nno/ We are often asked if it is better to have NNO parties on each block, or to hold neighborhood-wide NNO events. The answer is that both are good! Some neighborhoods with high density housing will host an event in the nearest park, while encouraging each building to also have their own informal get-together. The important thing is to make your neighbors aware of all the resources they can take advantage of to prevent crime--and the most important resources on your block are your neighbors!
