CANDO Seeks Consultant for Central Neighborhood Phase I Review

Sept 7, 2010

Request for Proposals

The Central Area Neighborhood Development Organization (CANDO) requests proposals for a review of the first phase of the Minneapolis Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) in the Central neighborhood. The phase I review is to be neighborhood-based with ample input from and collaboration with the Central community. The planning process should include:

  • Meeting with each of CANDO’s three advisory committees: Community leadership, housing and economic development. The consultant will take steps to ensure a sizeable and representative turn-out at these meetings;
  • Designing and executing a neighborhood study including assessing demographics and community issues. A multi-method study would be ideal including focus groups and a representative survey. Because we have a racially and ethnically diverse neighborhood, we prefer someone with research experience with diverse groups and the ability or resources to conduct the research in multiple languages (Spanish, Hmong and Somali).
  • Surveying a representative, random sample of residents and other stakeholders to gather their input. The consultant will develop the survey instrument, method and sampling techniques;
  • Organizing a community meeting to gather input about community priorities;
  • Using CANDO’s web site, social media and other technology to gather input;
  • Presenting a first draft of the phase I review to CANDO’s board of directors with opportunities for public input;
  • Presenting a final draft of the phase I review to the CANDO board of directors;
  • Obtaining approval by the CANDO board of the phase I review;
  • Making amendments as needed and obtaining community approval of the phase I review per NRP requirements.

(Note: Deliverables are in bold.)

The phase I review will result in a document of no fewer than ten pages including photographs; it will identify successes and failures of the work funded by NRP in the Central neighborhood in phase I. The consultant will report monthly to the CANDO board of directors. Budget: The consultant will propose a budget for the project. Timeline: The consultant will propose a timeline for the project. Send proposals by Friday, Oct. 8, 2010 to mplscando@gmail.com. Contact CANDO’s community coordinator, Jim Parsons at 612-824-1333, or CANDO President Sierra Leone Samuels at 612-272-7367 with any questions you may have.

SE Como neighborhood free store needs donations

When:September 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9
10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Where:U of M Reuse Warehouse
883 29th Ave SE, Minneapolis
Contact:Alison or Justin
(612) 676-1731
mimo@comogreenvillage.info

A combination of positive press from the Star Tribune, neighborhood word-of-mouth, and the state of the economy has all but overrun our MIMO (Move-in/Move-out) neighborhood free store. This is a temporary "store" set up inside the UofM Reuse Warehouse. We had a decent amount of inventory at the start of this 10 day event on Tuesday from neighborhood donations, but with over 400 shoppers in 3 days our inventory of household items is all but depleted. For a listing of what we accept go to www.comogreenvillage.org and look for "MIMO". No couches or fully upholstered furniture, or large electronics like TVs. Items most needed are tables, chairs, bookshelves, desks, kitchen items and similar used by college students moving into a new place. The store runs until 9/11, but we'd like donations dropped off by 9/9 so there's time for them to be picked-up before we close.

This is a volunteer driven effort, so we could also use volunteers if you have interest in recycling and reusing items.

Here is the link to the Star Tribune article that was on the front page of the business section yesterday:

Neighborhood organizations, especially in North Minneapolis, may want to take advantage of the information provided in a session on "Working with the Media" sponsored by NorthNews and Northeaster newspapers September 15 and 20 (two opportunities, same content.)

Ever wonder why the media show up at some events and not others, why they choose the stories they do, and where they find ideas? Tips will be offered for working with community newspapers, metro newspapers, radio and TV. Participants will learn about program features, event coverage, and advertising campaigns.

One session will be held Wednesday, September 15, 2-4 p.m.; the other, Monday evening Sept. 20, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Light, healthy refreshments available. Location: Plymouth Christian Youth Center, 2210 Oliver Ave. N., Minneapolis, MN 55411.

To reserve a spot (each session limited to 20) call Margo Ashmore at 612-867-4874.
