Since the devastating tornado struck North Minneapolis on May 22, thousands of volunteers, nonprofits, church groups, businesses and government agencies have pitched in to help folks recover and rebuild.

One key piece of the cleanup is to get rid of the storm-related debris that the tornado left in its path. There have been clean up efforts since May 22, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

There are two upcoming Clean Sweep days to help folks get storm debris loaded onto trucks for proper disposal and 200 volunteers are needed for each day. Volunteers will get specific meeting location information when they sign up for a volunteer shift.

Clean Sweep Days

  • Saturday, June 18
    8 a.m. – noon
    noon – 4 p.m.
    (100 volunteers each shift)
  • Saturday, June 25
    8 a.m. – noon
    noon – 4 p.m.
    (100 volunteers each shift)

Those interested in volunteering must be 18 years old, commit to working a four-hour shift, be able to lift at least 40 pounds, and wear thick-soled shoes, ideally work boots – no tennis shoes (food, work gloves & protective eye gear will be provided).

To sign up, call the Neighborhood and Community Relations Department at: (612) 673-2243.

The June 18 Clean Sweep will be picking up debris in the area of 44th to 29th avenues north from Lyndale to Newton avenues. The June 25 Clean Sweep will be in the area of 29th – 12th avenues north from Humboldt to Xerxes.

The City of Minneapolis will work with neighborhood organizations throughout the summer to identify if additional Clean Sweeps are needed to assist those impacted by the tornado. These sweeps are the result of a collaboration of north Minneapolis neighborhoods with the support of the Pohlad Family Foundation, working with City Departments including Public Works Solid Waste & Recycling, Emergency Preparedness, and the Neighborhood and Community Relations Department.
